This Lenten Season, instead of going into the Wilderness with Jesus, we are journeying up the Mountain to sit at the feet of Jesus to partake of his Mountaintop Blessings - called the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew, Chapter 5.

The Beatitudes are often treated as a set of teachings—to be studied, analyzed, or moralized. But for the early Church, they were also something more: a rhythm of prayer, a guide for worship, and a path for spiritual formation. The Beatitudes were used not only as theological text but as devotional and liturgical experience in the first centuries of Christianity. In exploring these aspects, we open a window into how early believers understood these blessings—not as abstract virtues, but as a living shape for the soul.

Each week we will engage one or two beatitudes through readings in various translations, music, reflection and engagement questions. Colouring sheets of the beatitudes will be available during coffee time to "colour this wisdom" together - or at home.

Download the document below which includes multiple translations of the weekly beatitudes we are engaging during Lent. You are invited to use them as a daily/weekly spiritual practice. Read through the various translations, make notes of which ones resonate with you, which ones confuse you, which ones inspire you…Take time to sit at the feet of Jesus, and see how these Mountaintop Blessings can guide your inner and outer world.

Also in the document are some commentaries on the various translations that I have incorporated into my reflections each week… Enjoy!

In playful wisdom,

Sophia
