The volunteers who serve breakfast to the children at Nicomekl Elementary School in Langley City are gearing up for another year.
There are many children who come to school without breakfast. Last year we had an average of 30 kids each school morning to whom we served a variety of menu items, including bagels and toppings, our version of McMuffins, cereal, fruit and juice. We have a dedicated group of women and one man who come each day to do this.
There is no money in the school budget, so the program is funded by donations. UCoL donates $500 annually towards this worthwhile work. There are also some who donate individually. About 18 months ago The Breakfast Club of Canada became involved with the Langley School District and we were fortunate at that time to be one of 6 schools in the district who received some funding. This was a great help, as the costs to provide breakfast amount to around $4,000 a year.
This year, more schools will be receiving funding from The Breakfast Club of Canada, and because of this, funding for Nicomekl school breakfast program will be less this year. Our share of this money for 2016-2017 will be reduced to $1,500, so even with UCoL’s contribution, we will be quite short of dollars.
We would like to invite anyone in our congregation and wider community who would like to help out financially to consider making a small regular contribution to “feed the kids”. As in the song from Mary Poppins, if a few of us have ‘tuppence’ to spare, it would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
Please speak to Maureen Burgess or call the church office if you have any questions.
