We acknowledge with gratitude that we live and gather on the unceded and ancestral lands of the q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), Máthxwi (Matsqui), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), and Se’mya’me (Semiahmoo) peoples. We honour their faithful stewardship of the land and seek to walk in the Spirit of reconciliation.
Christianity has been guilty of a patriarchal history that has been discounting and even oppressive of women. Our concept of God as masculine - God as Father or King - certainly contributes to our slide into patriarchy. Although written in patriarchal contexts, the Bible itself does not refer to God exclusively in masculine metaphors. This Mother’s Day, we will take time to honour the impactful qualities of the mothers in our lives, and explore the biblical maternal images for God, to help us experience a fuller and richer truth about God.
